Meet Lisa of Freda's Peanut Butter

To celebrate our 50th birthdays we toured round New Zealand in a camper van (named Freda) and were really inspired by the quality of food that was available, in particular the peanut butter. I thought that there was potential in the UK for a tasty artisan peanut butter. I wanted to create a product that was flavour driven without compromising on the quality of the ingredients.

We make Freda’s ourselves in small batches rather than being outsourced to a large factory so we can keep an eye on the quality. We source the best quality high-oleic peanuts from Argentina, which are deeply roasted to bring out the flavour. We grind the nuts and then blend in the wonderful organic ingredients that make up our iconic flavours – simple!

As a business we try to be as environmentally conscious as possible, we have always packed our peanut butter in glass jars rather than plastic. The beauty of glass is that it can be recycled infinitely whereas plastic can only be reused a few times. We use paper based outer packaging for the majority of purposes. You’ve got to think about making sure that products arrive safely first time otherwise it’s a huge waste of resources if they have to be thrown away. We avoid palm oil as it is globally causing catastrophic environmental damage, and it’s so difficult as you can find it in all sorts of things under different names. If we were all a little bit more aware, use less plastic, recycle and waste less it could make a big difference.

The South West foodie community is really supportive. We have some great friends within and we have helped each other. All of our flavours have a Taste of the West gold award, we also hold 4 x 2-star Great Taste awards. You won’t find us on the supermarket shelves so we can continue to make our butters exactly as we want them to be.

What’s the first restaurant you’re going to visit? The first place you’ll travel to?

Mowgli street food in Manchester! We had a fabulous night and the food was delicious too. Treacle tamarind fries…who knew!

What is your lazy go-to / comfort food dish when cooking? Do you have a recipe?

I seem to cook satay a lot. There’s always a jar of Freda’s open in the cupboard so combined with some lime juice, soy sauce, coconut milk and spices poured over stir fried veggies and served with rice or noodles. It’s really quick and tasty.

What’s the strangest dish someone has used your products for? Have you tried it?

We have a customer who puts our Chilli peanut butter on his porridge. He says it changed his life! Maybe a step too far for most but it would certainly wake you up in the morning!
